From Secretary of State John Kerry:  “The Department of State’s Our Ocean conference is about creating and galvanizing a synergy with leaders from more than 80 countries representing foreign, economic, and oceans ministries, non-governmental organizations, foundations, private companies, and the scientific and research communities to focus on the ocean’s problems and on the solutions.  The ocean is responsible for cycling water, carbon, and nutrients throughout our planet.  More than one billion people in every corner of the world depend on fish as their primary source of protein.  Fisheries alone support the livelihoods of up to 12 percent of the world’s population.  So all of today’s challenges – illegal overfishing, growing marine pollution, and acidification that have degraded the ocean and are impacting on communities and ecosystems around the world – all demand effective diplomacy, and collective action.”
